Weve come from the Good Shepherd School to speak to you about what we have been doing for the past few months. We hope that you enjoy it. As our Project for the Childrens Parliament, we have decided to try to set up a Schools Council. With the help of Sue and Ieuan we have managed to lay the foundations to setting up a Schools Council. To do some research on the benefits of a School Council we decided to write to three schools that has a School Council, asking to interview their Council. For us to make the most of our visit, the Year 6 class constructed a questionnaire of all the questions we wanted an answer to. We were able to visit a nearby school, Greenside, and interview their Schools Council. They gave us lots of ideas on ways to start up a Council, and going about Fundraising. To attract attention to the idea of a Schools Council at our school we designed and displayed Posters around the school advertising its benefit. We understand that the School Council will work in partnership with other groups of people within our school. Some of our class interviewed Miss Doogan, our Headteacher, the school Governors and the PTA. We chose these people because for a Council to be effective we would need these people on our side. Also, they will be able to give us lots of advice and help with getting the things that we want for our school. We wanted the rest of the school to know what we are hoping to so, therefore
we went around the classes and gave short Presentations, explaining why
we think a Schools Council is a good idea and also listed the possible
things that we could achieve by having a School Council. Once everyone
was aware what a School Council was, we sent out Ballot forms to each
class to see how many people wanted a Schools Council, and we found
that in all of the classes the majority of the school children wanted
one. We have discussed all of the people who will be involved, how many representatives from each class there will be, we have decided that there will be two: one Boy and one Girl to be fair. The class will choose these people. When we went to Greenside, we were able to see what they have managed to achieve with the help of their Council, and when we left we were all amazed and it encouraged us to think more about the Council that we are hoping to set up. Some things we have learned is we all can have our own say, no opinions were rejected. We mainly worked with partners, and we found that good because it gave us all the opportunity to be able to listen to each other and accept their opinions, even though we had different views, but that made us realise that in a Council, that is how it would be like. We learnt that it is all about listening and not only talking. We have learnt how to co-operate with each other and let everyone get a turn to say something, even if it is totally irrelevant. The last thing we have discussed as a class is when we should set up the Council. We will be doing our SATs in May and so once they are over we will set up our School Council. We feel really proud that we have done all this work for a School Council because once we have left The Good Shepherd school we will know that we have been responsible for the fact that The Good Shepherd has a School Council.
