The
project with Avonmore Primary focused on local black history and
the
Abolition of Slavery (2004 was UNESCO’s commemoration
of the abolition). The children researched the lives and histories
of local black figures and former slaves, such as Ellen and William
Craft.
SHAPE
artist, Leonora Rose-Aqotu worked with the children to produce
a performance detailing their research using poetry, theatre and
tableau. This process was filmed and produced as a video entitled “The
Struggle for Freedom”. It was presented at the “Art by
Young People” event in February 2005. It will also be distributed
to local primary schools as a Black History teaching resource.
