ABOUT
THIS SITE
the aim of this site is to provide a focus for young
people's work relating to issues around la21.
The
site is funded by the London Borough
of Hammersmith and Fulham who are committed to listening to young
people's concerns.
The work the young people have done in looking at their local neighbourhoods
and putting their websites together is co-ordinated by Hammersmith
and Fulham Urban Studies Centre with help from Children
and Neighbourhoods in London.
WHAT
IS LA21?
Local Agenda 21 is the local version of Agenda 21 - an international
agreement made at the first Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in June
1992.
This conference agreed that changes were necessary to tackle environmental,
social and economic problems around the world.
179 countries signed up to this agreement and more than 1800 local authorities
in 64 countries are working on the project.
The majority of councils in the U.K. are preparing their own Local Agenda
21, based on the action and concerns expressed by people in their community.
The hope is that, through everyone's participation and effort, progress
will be made to improve our quality of life.
As part of this process, children and young people have been researching
how Hammersmith and Fulham has become what it is today and how it might
change in the future. They have been thinking and talking about what is
good and bad in the local area and what is important to them in making
changes for the better. This website contains their thoughts and ideas
for improving quality of life and their action plans for achieving it.
