SAY
IT LOUD - LONDON SCHOOLS & YOUNG PEOPLE'S SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT
A
Festival to link schools, youth, citizenship and the environment
10 years after the Earth Summit
PURPOSE
OF PROJECT
· To use the World Summit for Sustainable Development in
Johannesburg in August 2002 to promote the global dimension of
environmental education projects in schools, as a part of the
international citizenship, geography and science elements of the
national curriculum.
· To add value to school projects in each Borough that
seek to raise awareness of sustainable development issues in the
citizenship curriculum, by linking them to a London-wide celebration.
· To promote wider public awareness of the links between
local environmental and global development issues, through interest
in a London-wide event for schools.
FORMAT
OF THE EVENT
The event will have two stages:
1. Summer and Autumn terms - Boroughs are running projects in
their schools. These may be new projects or existing initiatives,
but all should have an international focus, perhaps by twinning
with a partner school in Africa, or with an existing "twin".
A variety of projects will be encouraged to celebrate London's
cultural diversity, and the different character of different areas
of London.

2.
A LONDON SUMMIT FESTIVAL - NOVEMBER 28TH
ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY AND SCIENCE MUSEUM
In
the morning schools or young people from each Borough will
present their project to demonstrate how their school's
action for their local environment will also promote global
well-being. Presentations will encourage use of IT technology
in the RGS lecture theatre, or by exhibitions.
In addition the participants will have an opportunity to
question a distinguished panel, and to take part in a video
of the day prepared by young people. It may be possible
to set up a "live" link to an overseas school
In
the afternoon participants will have the opportunity to
visit relevant parts of the Science Museum and see the "Blue
Planet" IMAX show. One school has been invited by the
Science Museum to carry out an eco-audit of the Museum on
its behalf
The
Minister is invited to join Stephen Twigg, the London Schools
Minister, during the morning session, and to deliver a keynote
speech during the IT presentations in the lecture theatre,
around 11.30, for about 5 minutes. She could then tour the
other static displays, to include a photo-opportunity with
some of the children.
