SHOWCASE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS IN LONDON BOROUGH SCHOOLS FOR 2002
Brent
  • Schools Ethnic Drama project.
    A GOL funded project to encourage ethnic minority pupils to write and perform a play about Local Agenda 21 on their own style and language.
Camden
  • The Children and Neighbourhoods project.
    In partnership with the Children's Society.
    Focuses on young people taking part in environmental projects as well as the consultation and involvement of young people in service delivery issues related to the Environment Department services.
  • Camden Environmental Education Network
    A group of providers of EE in the borough. CEEN is a forum for co-ordinating projects with young people and sharing information and resources. It is proposed that this network will disseminate information about the event.
  • Summer/Autumn environmental projects
Croydon
  • Eco-School initiative
    A drive to encourage schools to address environmental issues and attain eco-status.

  • Teacher Training
    Training for teachers involved in Sustainable Development education. Focusing on Geography, Science and Citizenship.
  • "Energy Matters in London"
    A project in partnership with Sutton Ecology centre that helps and encourages children to do hope and school energy audits.
  • Green Travel Plans
    Promoting "Walking Buses" and cycling.
Ealing
  • Green Travel Plans with an international perspective
    Working with their Green Travel Plan Co- ordinator to look at how people get to school here and in other countries.
  • Developing Citizenship projects
Hammersmith & Fulham
  • School Parliaments
    An initiative where individual schools present their proposed environmental projects in the Council Chamber.
  • Schools Parliament International project
    Comparing a local environmental problem here a similar problem for a school in a 3rd world town e.g. water supply.
  • Green Travel Plans
    Promoting cycling and walking.
Harrow
  • Sustainable Youth Award
    A programme of visits to schools (including weekend schools), and youth groups and encouragement of sustainability project development through the SEO (School Environmental Officer) Network.
  • The programme is seeking to develop international links.
Hounslow
  • Schools Environmental Audit
    Setting up an Environmental Audit to find out information on environmental projects that are currently being carried out in schools. Issues such as school grounds, waste management, energy efficiency, transport and healthy living will be addressed.
  • LA21 Education Conference
    Education Conference was held in February with the aim of helping teachers address environmental issues in the curriculum.
  • Issues addressed included
    Encouraging schools to use local allotments plots.
    The Eco-Schools scheme.
    Safe Routes to school.
    Environmental walks.
Lambeth
  • Children's Environmental Fund
    For students to get involved in projects that can then be disseminated as best practice to other schools across London.
  • Youth Council
    To shadow the existing Council and in so doing address some of the environmental issues associated with cultural diversity.
Lewisham
  • "Thinking Globally" Event - November 2002
    Learning from Lewisham communities with recent experience of living in other societies and environments. Youth will relate local environmental issues (graffiti, abandoned cars) with those in their families' countries of origin and give presentations at the Horniman Museum's Centre for the Understanding of the Environment.
  • Young Streetleaders
    Engaging young street leaders in local Quality of Life issues.
  • Clean and Green Schools
    Council Waste Awareness projects with awards for various achievements. Also encourages clean schools and playgrounds through waste audits.
  • Groundwork Thames Gateway London South projects
    Involving in a range of environmental improvements such as adopting nature reserves and rivers & developing school ecology gardens.
  • Groundwork Thames Gateway London South "Safe Routes to School"
    Promoting "walking buses" and traffic reduction.
  • Creekside Education Trust Schools Programme
    Environmental education charity's programme of schools visits to Deptford Creek combined with project work on the tidal creek environment - flooding, fish migration, tidal ecology and sustainable livelihoods based on the creek environment. To be housed in a unique "floating classroom" (launch in autumn)
Merton
  • Eco-School initiative
    Merton currently has three full eco-schools and one on silver status.
  • Environmental Education Project
    A borough wide project run in partnership with EnCams & Groundwork. The partners go into schools with curriculum based teaching modules on: Waste & Recycling, Energy & Water, Consumption, Transport, Biodiversity & Planning.
  • Green Travel Plans
    There is a dedicated green travel plans officer who is rapidly expanding the "Walking Buses" network and promoting cycling. This initiative is interlinked with the "Healthy Schools" programme.
Waltham Forest
  • Young people & the Environment group
    A core group of youth workers, teachers have been running projects, conferences, workshops to help young people understand environmental issues.
    in a practical way. The group also runs a youth forum and has representative to the UK Youth Parliament.
  • Young tree warden scheme
    The Local Agenda 21 officer runs this scheme with Arboricultural Services to encourage children to adopt local trees. The scheme has won national acclaim with a golden acorn award from Trees in Time & Place and initiative has been incorporated into curriculum based school lesson plans.
